Halachic responsa of R. Yosef Ibn Lev with over twenty glosses by the Boruch Ta’am.
R. Boruch Frankel-Thumim (1760-1828), was known from a young age as a child prodigy with a lightning quick grasp, combined with great piety and exceptional diligence. He was a talmid of R. Meshulam Igra. He served as Rav in Vishnitza where he established a Yeshiva, and from 1800 in Leipnik where in addition to his rabbinical duties he led a preeminent Yeshiva. World famous as one of the most prominent Talmidei Chachomim of his generation, he was held in awe by his rabbinical contemporaries as well as the masses. Father in law of R. Chaim Halberstam of Tzanz (Divrei Chaim). In 1841, his sefer Boruch Ta’am was published with the notes of the Divrei Chaim. In the introduction the Divrei Chaim writes of the enormity of the greatness in Torah of the Boruch Ta’am and how they had learnt chavrusa for a year covering most of Shas with Rishonim. Prior to the sefer’s publication the Chasam Sofer was requested to write an approbation. In a letter (printed in the Boruch Ta’am) the Chasam Sofer replied with astonishment that the Boruch Ta’am’s sefer should need any approbation and continued at length extolling the Boruch Ta’am’s greatness, concluding “Boruch Ta’amo U’Mishnoso”. The Ma’Haram Ash writes in his sefer “Imrei Yosher” that with the petiro of the Boruch Ta’am the era of “Ziv Ha’Chochma” had ended.
Towards the end of his lifetime the Boruch Ta’am unfortunately lost his eyesight. His talmidim related that although he was unable to see, he was still “miraculously” able to read even from the smallest seforim. On one occasion a talmid accidentally passed him a sefer upside down. The Boruch Ta’am opened it and read from it as usual. It was then apparent that the Boruch Ta’am hadn’t been “reading” at all, rather he was quoting “by heart”, having retained the entire Shas and poskim in his memory.

ר’ ברוך פרנקל-תאומים (תק”כ-תקפ”ח 1760-1828) נודע מגיל צעיר כילד פלא בעל תפיסה מבריקה בשילוב צדקות מופלאה ושקדנות יוצאת דופן. הוא היה תלמיד של ר’ משולם אגרא. הוא שימש כרב בויז’ניצא, שם הקים ישיבה, ומשנת תק”ס (1800) עבר ללייפניק ועמד בראש ישיבה גדולה בנוסף לתפקידיו ברבנות. הוא נודע ברחבי העולם כאחד מתלמידי החכמים המפורסמים בדורו והוערץ על ידי חבריו הרבנים והמון העם. חמיו של ר’ חיים הלברשטאם מצאנז (דברי חיים). בשנת תר”א (1841) יצא לאור ספרו “ברוך טעם” עם הערות של הדברי חיים. בהקדמה כותב הדברי חיים על גדלותו של הברוך טעם בתורה ועל השנה שבה הם למדו יחד את רוב הש”ס עם ראשונים בחברותא. לקראת פרסום הספר, התבקש החת”ם סופר לכתוב הסכמה. במכתב (המודפס ב”ברוך טעם”) משתומם החת”ם סופר על כך שספרו של הברוך טעם זקוק בכלל להסכמה, וממשיך להעלות על נס את גדלותו של הברוך טעם. הוא מסיים במילים “ברוך טעמו ומשנתו”. המהר”ם א”ש כותב בספרו “אמרי יושר” שעם פטירת הברוך טעם תם עידן “זיו החכמה”.
בערוב ימיו איבד הברוך טעם את מאור עיניו. תלמידיו סיפרו שלמרות עיוורונו, הוא הצליח “באורח נס” לקרוא גם מהספרים הקטנים ביותר. פעם תלמיד העביר לו בטעות ספר הפוך, והברוך טעם פתח אותו וקרא ממנו כרגיל. אז התברר שהברוך טעם לא “קרא” כלל אלא ציטט בעל פה לאחר שאצר את כל הש”ס והפוסקים בזיכרונו.
