The Sefer Chayei Odom was authored R. Avraham Danzig of Vilna to serve a basic work of Halocha for both scholars and laymen. Following its first publication in 1810 it became enormously popular and was reprinted tens of times. In many communities there were “Chevras” that met daily for the study of Chayei Odom.
R. Avraham Danzig (1748-1820) studied under R. Yechezkel Landau (Noda B’Yehuda) in Prague and was then offered the position to be Rav of Vilna. He declined, and instead earned his livelihood as a merchant. Only in his later years did he agree to accept the position of Dayan in Vilna. His most famous works are Chayei Odom on Orach Chaim and Chochmas Odom on Yoreh De’ah. He was a Mechutan of the Vilna Gaon.
On the back page, there is an inscription stating that the sefer belongs to the Sadigura Kloiz.

הספר חיי אדם נכתב על ידי ר’ אברהם דנציג מווילנא בתור ספר הלכה בסיסי לתלמידי חכמים ופשוטי העם כאחד. בעקבות הדפסתו הראשונה בתק”ע (1810) הוא זכה לתגובות נלהבות והודפס מחדש עשרות פעמים. בקהילות רבות היו “חברות” שנפגשו ללימוד יומי של החיי אדם.
ר’ אברהם דנציג (תק”ח-תק”פ 1748-1820) למד תחת חסותו של ר’ יחזקאל לנדא (נודע ביהודה) בפראג עד שהוצע לו לשמש כרב העיר וילנא. הוא סירב להצעה, ובמקום זאת התפרנס כסוחר. רק בשנותיו המאוחרות הוא ניאות לקבל את משרת הדיין בווילנא. ספריו המפורסמים ביותר הם “חיי אדם” על אורח חיים ו”חכמת אדם” על יורה דעה. הוא היה מחותן של הגאון מווילנא.
