Halachic responsa of the renowned R. Shmuel Abuav.
The scandal concerning the false Messiah Shabtai Tzvi was amongst the most tragic events to befall the Jewish people in exile. Even following Shabtai Tzvi’s outrageous conversion to Islam in 1666 the issue refused to die down. In 1668 Nathan of Gaza, a charlatan who posed as Shabtai Tzvi’s prophet, traveled to Venice. Intercepted by the local Beth Din, he was subjected to trial by R. Shmuel Abuav, R. Yaakov Ha’Levy and R. Shlomo Saravel, which ended in Nathan of Gaza signing a retraction. This important document was then signed by many of the local rabbinical figures and widely distributed. An additional letter was sent to R. Yaakov Sasportas of Amsterdam, one of earliest and most vocal opponents of Shabtai Tzvi. Both these important documents were printed in R. Shmuel Abuav responsa, however are they are missing in many copies.

Additional library stamps of R. Y.Y Ruderman Rosh Yeshivas Ner Yisroel Baltimore. Signature of R. Shmuel Mordechai Rabinowitz (died 1939) a distinguished descendant of the Peshisca dynasty, who served as Rebbe in Palince.

דבר שמואל. מהדורה ראשונה ויניציאה תס”ב (1702). מהדורה בלתי מצונזרת עם נספח “זכרון לבני ישראל” (אודות שבתי צבי
שערוריית משיח השקר שבתי צבי נמנית בין המאורעות הטרגיים ביותר שפקדו את עם ישראל בגלות. גם לאחר התאסלמותו המזעזעת של שבתי צבי בשנת תכ”ו (1666), המהומה לא שכחה. בשנת תכ”ח (1668) נסע נתן מגזה, שרלטן שהתחזה לנביא של שבתי צבי, לוונציה. בית הדין המקומי זימן אותו למשפט בראשות ר’ שמואל אבוהב, ר’ יעקב הלוי ור’ שלמה סרבל, ובסופו של דבר חתם נתן מגזה על כתב ביטול. מסמך חשוב זה נחתם על ידי דמויות רבניות מקומיות רבות והופץ בהרחבה. מכתב נוסף נשלח לר’ יעקב סספורטס מאמסטרדם, אחד המתנגדים המוקדמים והנחרצים ביותר של שבתי צבי. שני המסמכים החשובים האלו הודפסו בשו”ת של ר’ שמואל אבוהב, אולם הם חסרים בעותקים רבים.
כולל חותמות ספרייה של ר’ מאיר שלום רבינוביץ מקלושין (נפטר בתרס”ג-1903), צאצא דגול לשושלת פשיסחא, ששימש כרב ואדמו”ר בפוריזוב ובקלושין. חותמות ספרייה נוספות של ר’ י.י. רודרמן, ראש ישיבת נר ישראל בולטימור. חתימה של ר’ שמואל מרדכי רבינוביץ (נפטר בתרצ”ט-1939), צאצא חשוב לשושלת פשיסחא, שכיהן כרב בפאלינס.
